At Safer Together our Commitment is to prevent harm to our frontline workers by simplifying, standardising and sharing. In line with our Commitment, we have formally endorsed three complementary frameworks from the International Association of Oil & Gas Producers (IOGP): Life-Saving Rules; Process Safety Fundamentals; and Human Performance Principles.
IOGP Life-Saving Rules
"Life-Saving Rules...are not a replacement for a management system, competent people, site rules or procedures – but when these barriers fail, following the Rules is a final barrier, designed for the worker to have complete control over. (IOGP)"
The IOGP Life-Saving Rules (LSRs) have been developed to give frontline workers a clear, simple set of actions to protect themselves and their colleagues from the activities most likely to result in a fatality. The LSRs are informed by data — drawn from analysis of more than a decade of fatal incidents across our global industry — and are designed to focus attention on the things an individual can control, supported by memorable icons and plain "I" statements that are recognisable industry-wide.
IOGP have made a significant contribution to collaboration across the oil and gas industry. Safer Together is delighted to work with IOGP to promote a common safety language and the prevention of fatalities in our industry.
Through our members, Safer Together applies the LSRs to keep frontline workers focused on the critical actions that prevent fatal incidents. We have incorporated the LSRs into our Industry Safety Induction (ISI)and Learning Event Bulletins so that lessons are shared consistently across our members.
IOGP Process Safety Fundamentals
“Process Safety Fundamentals empower the frontline to raise issues and dilemmas… openly and transparently, without fear of criticism or reprisal…and should not be tied to disciplinary measures. (IOGP)”
The IOGP Process Safety Fundamentals (PSFs) have been developed to assist companies reduce, and ultimately eliminate, fatal and high severity process safety events. The PSFs are informed by data and designed to draw attention to situations that are most likely to lead to process safety event fatalities.
Safer Together will apply the PSFs as a tool to maintain focus on our critical controls needed at the front line. They are referenced in our Industry Safety Induction (ISI) and Learning Event Bulletins.

Human Performance Principles
“Human Performance Principals recognise people interact with systems, tools and processes across all levels of organisations. They encompass the way teams adapt to complex, dynamic environments, often navigating challenges and dilemmas to successfully carry out assigned tasks and activities with the goal of creating error-tolerant systems based around the capabilities, characteristics, and needs of people. Five Human Performance Principles (HPPs) have been endorsed by IOGP:
- Error is normal,
- Blame fixes nothing,
- Context drives behaviour,
- Learning is vital, and
- How leaders (you) respond matters.
These principles shift attention from who was involved to how the work was set up, to enable design of systems, tools and conditions that are tolerant of error and that help our people speak up and learn. Human Performance is the learning mindset that lays the foundation for the LSRs and PSFs. The HPPs support safer, more resilient operations by encouraging us to learn how work is done and to create conditions where people can succeed.
Safer Together is delighted to work with IOGP to promote a learning culture in our industry.
Safer Together will apply the HPPs as a foundation for how we learn and improve. We have incorporated them into our Safety Culture Framework — the "red thread" running through our Products and Programs, including our Safety Culture Survey, Industry Safety Induction (ISI) and Frontline Leadership Training.
