This is a question we commonly hear, and the answer is very simple – “Tell Them.”
One of Safer Together’s Guiding Principles is that we are a “Community of Leaders”. By this we mean that Safer Together is line-led, and that line leaders must take ownership and accountability – their actions (or inaction) make a difference. Visible, clear, consistent, engaged leadership with energy and enthusiasm for safety is the primary driver of a healthy safety culture.
Nacap is an energy infrastructure contractor with four decades of experience in delivering large-scale and complex energy infrastructure projects across Australia, Papua New Guinea and South-East Asia. Headquartered in Melbourne, the company has around 500 employees and expertise that spans pipelines, water, defence fuel systems, and renewable energy infrastructure. Nacap was one of the first companies to join Safer Together back in 2014.
Each month Nacap gathers all staff for a meeting – the All Staff Call. Having a workforce dispersed throughout the country and overseas necessitates that this happens virtually. This presented the perfect opportunity to integrate a briefing session about Safer Together that would reach everyone working for the company, regardless of where they are located.
Nacap President Matt O’Connell understands the importance of executive leaders taking ownership of, and accountability for safety. “Most people would be familiar with the phrase “what interests my boss fascinates me”. I wanted all our people to know that I am a firm believer in the value of Safer Together, and so I knew it was vital that they hear this directly from me.”
In late October 2025 the Nacap All Staff Call involved work teams dialling in from:
- Head office in Doncaster, Melbourne
- The Eight Mile Plains office in QLD
- the Port Moresby office in PNG
- the Plant Department in Dubbo, NSW
- the Uungula Windfarm Project in Wellington, NSW; and
- the Tindal Defence Project in Katherine, NT.
Matt led an introductory briefing to the entire Nacap team, assisted by Sean O’Donnell from the Safer Together support team, explaining to them:
- What is Safer Together, why it was established, and what are its objectives?
- How does Safer Together operate, and who is involved?
- The Safer Together Working Groups and the rationale for having each of them.
- The products, programs and events available through Safer Together, and highlighting those of particular relevance to Nacap’s business activities.
- And finally, why he decided that Nacap should join Safer Together and what he sees are the benefits for the company as a whole, the management team, frontline supervisors and the frontline workforce.
Matt reflected afterwards “I couldn’t be happier with how it went. It was an efficient and practical way of bringing all our people into the Safer Together mix – it was an excellent use of time, taking us only 15 mins to do”.
