The once prescriptive nature of fatigue risk management in the Oil and Gas industry (e.g., hours of work vs rest) is generally no longer accepted as sufficient to address fatigue-related risk in the workplace.

In a work context, fatigue is a state of mental and/or physical exhaustion which reduces a person’s ability to perform work safely and effectively, and comes in three forms:

  • PHYSICAL: Pronounced physical exhaustion and reduced ability to engage in physical activities
  • MENTAL: Pronounced mental exhaustion and reduced ability to engage in mental or cognitive activities
  • EMOTIONAL: Pronounced emotional exhaustion and reduced ability to engage in emotional activities

Our Fatigue Risk Management Portal stores collated tools, resources and education materials applicable for fatigue risk management and mitigation for workers in the Australian Energy Production Industry.

The use of these tools is recommended to:

  1. Facilitate the systematic identification of workplace hazards relating to fatigue,
  2. To define and guide organisations to evaluate, manage and mitigate fatigue-related risks, and
  3. To support conversations to destigmatise self-reporting of fatigue.

In the Portal, our Health Working Group has gathered materials from member companies and recognised sources.  This includes:

Fatigue Risk Management Guidance – Designed to support effective implementation of fatigue management in the workplace.  Our Working Group has collated information and data from member companies, key industry and government bodies and prepared this summary evaluation and comparison of available guidance material (including best practice).

Individual Fatigue Risk Assessment Tool – A Tool designed to determine an individual's Fatigue Risk score and proposes actions / mitigations appropriate to the risk level.  It enables a worker to self-assess their fatigue and can be used to assess fatigue risk in the following scenarios:

  • Start of Shift
  • Extended Shifts/Rosters
  • Shift Changes
  • Excessive Night Shifts
  • Call Outs: For unexpected work calls
  • Journey Management
  • Self-Reported Symptoms
  • Post-Incident
  • Observed Symptoms

Fatigue Risk Management Education - Worker education Toolbox resources designed to improve and promote fatigue risk management understanding for workers in the Australian Energy Production Industry.

Fatigue Management Awareness e-Learn – Designed to provide workers with the foundational knowledge to understand what fatigue is, how to recognise and mitigate the risks of fatigue, and the responsibilities of both the worker and employer when it comes to fatigue risk management.

Designed to complement our Individual Fatigue Risk Assessment Tool and toolbox talks.  The content of this e-Learn is specifically targeted to frontline workers and supervisors.  The e-learn course will support members in meeting their obligations for fatigue risk management by ensuring all workers have an understanding of the following:

  • what fatigue is
  • the impacts and effects of fatigue
  • who is responsible for managing fatigue
  • of the symptoms and causes of fatigue
  • a method for assessing levels of fatigue
  • fatigue prevention measures
  • when and how fatigue must be reported
