In a first, our Land Transport Incident Review Panel was hosted by sponsors Beach Energy in Adelaide this month in a successful attempt to engage the sector in this region. Held during National Road Safety Week, the event was by every measure a success; with high-quality innovations, sharing and incidents presented to a full audience both face-to-face and virtually.
Glenn Watt (Beach Energy) welcomed delegates the room and online before handing over to Ash Barton (Beach Energy) for a Safety Moment ‘Adapting to the Elements: Controlling Land Transport Risk in Extreme Weather’.
Glenn then returned for a National Road Safety Week (NRSW) presentation – the theme for 2026 is ‘Driven to Distraction’. Distraction plays a significant role in Australian Road Safety, contributing to about one in six serious crashes and substantially increasing collision risk. Glenn closed by pointing members to the NRSW resource pack and supporting materials for rollout in the workplace.
And incident share followed from Nidal Machtoub (Beach Energy) - Lessons Learned from Remote IVMS Operations.
A fascinating and comprehensive presentation from Jarrod Holmes (Energy LogistiX) followed, ‘Making Transport Safety through Technology’, looking at the ‘technology ecosystem’ used in their company, and the safety improvements and benefits they have seen from integrating all these technologies.
Another tech innovation followed from Trent Ulmer (Dunns Earthmoving) ‘AI Fatigue Camera Management Insights’, or how Dunns Earthmoving deployed vision AI fatigue monitoring across their fleet, sharing the clear benefits of their approach.
Jonathon Quire (Ventia) then presented another incident, before a short break.
Matt Walker (Qube) was first up after the break with ‘Chain of Responsibility (CoR) Risk Management’, another tech innovation sharing Qube’s approach to integrating different systems – not in isolation – but to support timely decisions and verification in the CoR in real time.
The Land Transport Working Group projects were updated by Travis Kearsley (Arrow Energy) including an update to the Master Code Audit Terms of Reference project.
The Safer Together Master Code Audit Framework will bring together the NHVR Master Code and the Safer Together Land Transport Specifications into a unified assurance model. By aligning these two industry standards, the framework will provide operators and contract partners with a consistent set of expectations and audit criteria that strengthen compliance and support continuous improvement across the energy sector.
The structure will create simplicity and consistency across a range of assurance activities — from NHVR heavy vehicle audits through to light vehicles so that organisations can plan, prepare and demonstrate compliance within a single, integrated approach.
Ashley Linton (Beach Energy) thanked delegates for their attendance and participation, before closing the event out.
Thank you to Beach Energy for hosting and sponsoring this event - including the wonderful Beach Energy team for their facilitation.
