If your company has recently seen a decline in safety performance, boosting workforce engagement may be the key to transforming safety in a positive way. An engaged workforce plays a central role in ensuring companies are not only able to tackle problems and adapt to rapid changes, but also well positioned to emerge stronger.  If you’re looking for an effective and interactive frontline workforce engagement tool, Helping Hands may be an ideal solution.

What is Helping Hands? Where Did it Come From?

In response to the high incidence of hand injuries that were occurring at well sites in particular, the Drilling & Completions Industry in Queensland decided to develop and roll-out an interactive frontline workforce engagement program designed to reduce the incidence of hand and finger injuries. Consequently, Safer Together partnered with Helping Hands to develop the ‘Helping Hands – Hand and Finger Preservation Program’.

What’s So Special About This Particular Workforce Engagement Program?

The Helping Hands Program represents a unique opportunity for Member Companies to get involved with a worthwhile cause while super-charging employee engagement and improving hand safety at worksites by reinvigorating thinking about hand safety.

More than just a team building or training activity, the centrepiece of the program is an innovative workshop exercise in which participants immobilise their dominant hand and work in a small team to build a prosthetic hand, experiencing what it is like to perform simple work-related tasks with a hand-related disability.

Following the Workshop these prosthetic hands are donated to amputee landmine victims throughout the developing world.

Any company-specific messages (e.g., current number of hand injuries, initiatives to manage risks to hands and fingers) can be incorporated into how the activity is facilitated, with the activity effective for any number of participants.

The activity empowers every participant to make a real and lasting contribution, and in doing so reminds people what it feels like to be engaged in a truly purposeful and life-changing activity.

Are Other Member Companies Using Helping Hands? What Do They Think Of It?

Yes, they certainly are…and the feedback is overwhelmingly positive.  Take a look at these Deployment Case Studies to see what each company got out of it:

Case Study: Santos and Savanna
Case Study: Hofco Oilfield Services
