A Marine Safety Alert related to a Slip & Fall During Adverse Weather.

What Happened?

During transit to port in rough weather, waves entered the enclosed forecastle via the hawse pipes, exposing equipment to seawater. A three-person work party entered the forward mooring station to secure the pipes after planning controls such as adjusting heading/speed and wearing wet-weather PPE.

While the team members were securing the pipes a large set of waves came through that caused the vessel to pitch, causing one member of the work party to be raised up above the deck and fall awkwardly (ankle twisted).

On arrival in port, a shore-side medical appointment confirmed that the IP had sustained a significant ankle injury.
