Designed as a Common Industry Competencies refresher, August’s Lunch & Learn in Brisbane dove into the big questions - what CICs are, why members should adopt the Competencies, and the benefits to all our members by standardising competency requirements across our industry.

Our Common Industry Competencies Specification (CICs) defines consistent industry requirements for training courses, competency and validity periods - and aligns these requirements with Australian Units of Competence.  The CIC Project Team welcomed in-person and virtual delegates to this CICs refresher, aiming to encourage take-up and engagement with the initiative.

Hosted by Mick Campbell (Head of HSEQT, Shamrock Civil), who commenced with an introduction to the CICs and Performance Standards, clarifying exactly what the CICs are, and explaining that the CICs do not specify law, rather they drive offer a greater depth to a company’s training system that is designed to drive industry consistency; and how adoption of the initiative can benefit our members.

Mick handed over to Glenn Ross (Learning and Development Lead, INPEX) who then then stepped delegates through the use of the CICs and introduced and explained Performance Standards – they focus on critical elements of application of skills and knowledge relevant to the specific workplace task.

The next presentation was a ‘look forward’ for the CICs – with the team looking into future Line of Fire (how to address any training needs) and Driving (how common root causes can be utilised to provide a guideline for drive in/drive out, and driving on rural roads) Competencies.

A question & answer session rounded out the event, before in-person delegates retired to a luncheon.
