Our final event for 2023 was held in Brisbane by our Qld. Rig Site Safety Working Group (RSSWG) with their DCIIRP ‘Emerging Challenges in Maturing Fields – A New Age For Industry’.
MC David Shakhovskoy (Drilling & Completions Manager, Senex) kicked off by welcoming delegates, explaining the reasoning behind the event theme, and presenting a warm acknowledgement of country.
Chris Johns (Business Unit Leader Well Servicing, MPK), Han Lu (Well Engineering Team Lead, Arrow Energy) and Kyle Koziol (Executive General Manager, Ventia) opened the event via two informative and deeply affecting incident shares, followed by Ewan Mitchell (Executive Director, Geoglide) who did a fantastic job sharing a de-identified incident resulting in a hand injury.

Ewan also took the time to thoroughly explain the reasons why the RSSWG had initiated the 'Incident Review Panel' method of communicating incident learnings, making a strong endorsement for members to access the Line of Fire mini-portal and for members to leverage the High Value Learning Event sharing facility Safer Together provides members, which (once approved) are issued via Learning Event Bulletins.
Linda Hedger (Shell) and Scott Winterton (Shell) facilitated a thought exercise; walking participants through scenarios, while asking "What would you or your organisation do in this situation?” generating much discussion.

Kevin Geddert (Operations Support Services Manager, Savanna Energy Services), in his inimitable ‘Ted Talk’ style presented a brief history of injury recording methods, why they no longer serve us and offering suggestions for a different way forward.
Kevin has now been given approval to trial a new approach using real industry data. Post-event feedback showed a strong desire to have Kevin back to a future DCIIRP present his findings.
Savanna then showcased some smart use of technology via an animated video re-creation of a recent incident. Craig Hunter (HSE Manager, Savanna) advised that the original intent in the development of this tool was to share incident learnings, but due to its’ success, they are now exploring further use of the tool for hazard management, virtual reality, onboarding, verification of competency and hazard identification.
A presentation from Nathan Wilkins (Principal Inspector, Well Operations, Resources Safety & Health Queensland (RSHQ)) followed. This is the first time in many years a regulator had been at a DCIIRP. This was heralded by the group as an extremely progressive step in greater communication for all parties going forward. Nathan shared RSHQs 'areas of focus' and their risk-based framework, and the 2024-2026 Well Operations Focus.
Glenn Watt (VP Upstream Qld/NSW Upstream, Santos) then shared the Qld RSSWG work plan for 2024 and encouraged all delegates of member companies to get involved, to utilise Safer Together tools, and to share learnings to improve safety.
Glenn then had the great pleasure to announce the 2023 RSSWG ‘Best and Fairest’ Awards to Chris Johns and Danielle Leray (Technology Trials Execution Lead, Shell).
Our co-MC Shaun Klebeck (Operations Director, Savanna Energy) then had the great pleasure of summarising this great event by thanking all speakers, delegates and Safer Together - and wishing everyone a safe and happy holiday season, before everyone retired to a social function to round out the year.
Thank you to our event sponsors, Savanna Energy Services, and Senex for their generous contribution to the success of this event.
