On 31 May 2017, Safer Together and DrillSafe ran a joint DCIIRP/DrillSafe/DrillWell Forum in Brisbane. More than 100 representatives of companies from the drilling and completions community in Queensland gathered with their colleagues from all around Australia to hear presentations from Operators and Contractors about recent incidents and to share lessons learnt. In addition, several presentations focused on innovations to improve safety in the industry.
The event was kindly hosted by QGC and Savanna. The networking session was hosted by Kinetic. Trevor Vance, Marketing Manager, Savanna commented “This event provided a great opportunity for the Australian Drilling and Completions community to come together and collaborate on safety. It was great to see Operators and Contractors, East and West, offshore and onshore, blue collar and white collar all in a room with one common purpose. Safety. Savanna is very proud to partner with QGC and Kinetic to host such a unique event”.
Attendees heard presentations delivered by: Savanna, QGC, INPEX, Schlumberger, ERMS, and Santos.
Incident case studies presented on the day included: mud pump damage; hands free safety; dyanadrops; mechanical lifting.
Presentations on innovations included: effective supervision; closing the loop – quick checks.
DrillWell presentations included: P&A techniques using bentonite plugs; underbalance workovers in highly permeable CSG fields.
The DCIIRP/DrillSafe event finished with a panel session to discuss “Collaboration – how do we work together to improve safety”.
Nick Muecke, Well Construction Manager at Vermilion and member of the DrillSafe Committee made the trip from Perth to deliver the keynote address with Paul McDougall (Schlumberger). Nick also facilitated the DrillWell event. “In my view it was a very successful day. I have received very positive feedback from several sources. Thanks again to our Queensland brethren. You did a great job”.
