Brisbane’s process safety community gathered for a forum designed to focus on Process Safety Fundamentals in the Real World.
The event opened with Matt Loth (SLB), who delivered the welcome, site briefing and Acknowledgement of Country. Matt also thanked the event sponsors Santos GLNG and ConocoPhillips.
The first technical presentation was delivered by Deb Wallis (Ampol), who introduced the IOGP Process Safety Fundamentals. Deb used familiar road-safety examples to explain how simple fundamentals can support better frontline decisions. Her presentation highlighted that the fundamentals are data-informed, complementary to Life Saving Rules, and intended to help workers raise and address process safety concerns without creating a punitive culture.
Rob Graham (Santos) then presented an incident share, followed by Ross Larsen (APA Group) presenting “Proactive Damage Prevention for Gas Transmission.” Larsen outlined the challenges of protecting high-consequence pipeline assets across large networks, particularly as urban encroachment and third-party works increase exposure to potential damage. His presentation showed how better incident data, Power BI reporting, spatial analysis and targeted safety awareness programs can help organisations focus resources where they have the greatest impact.
Sarah Curry (ConocoPhillips) then shared another incident.
Following a short break, Matt Loth returned to present an incident before the final presentation came from Marc Ocampo Ramos (Beach Energy), who outlined Beach’s Process Safety Fundamentals roll-out. Ramos described how the company is embedding process safety behaviours through communication, roadshows, online training, recognition, branding, newsletters, engagement activities and dashboard monitoring. The program aims to build lasting habits that support strong process safety performance across Beach’s operations.
The event concluded with an extended question-and-answer panel with the presenters giving attendees the opportunity to compare experiences and explore practical implementation challenges. Matt returned to close the forum by encouraging participants to complete the post-event survey and continue applying the lessons shared across their own operations.
Thank you to everyone involved for their contribution to such a successful event.
