Our Cranes and Lifting Working Group exists to share best practices and issues related to incidents involving offshore cranes, hoisting, and lifting, and to improve the consistency of safety related activities, and this month, the Working Group did just that, meeting with Dr. Thomas O’Neill in Perth; there to share research findings.

Safer Together’s Tom Pettitt along with Cranes and Lifting Working Group representatives, were delighted to meet with Dr Thomas O'Neill on his recent trip to Perth.

Thomas shared with the Group a current project he is working on with his team to improve mining and construction safety programs, following an oilsands fatality in 2022, and the Working Group in turn presented on their Rigging and Crane Operating Competencies Project.

The employers and contractors involved in the incident pleaded guilty under provincial occupational health and safety laws and were fined CAD$1.24m.

Under creative sentencing laws in Canada, instead of the fine money going to the province, it’s paid to a third party—typically a safety association or post-secondary institution—to use to address occupational health and safety concerns. In this case, fine will fund research and industry engagement that explores the psychology behind work-based safety.

Following discussion on how the Working Group and Dr Thomas could collaborate into the future, the Working Group is delighted to announce that Dr. Thomas will be presenting on his research project at their upcoming Cranes and Lifting Forum on 1st April in Perth.
