Our Rig Site Safety Working Group gathered in August to consider the theme ‘Safety Mindset – Psychological | Behavioural | Cultural’ including a keynote that might be our most requested presentation ever!

Lana Cordy (Wells Operations Manager – WI & PA, Shell QGC and event co-host) welcomed delegates to Drilling and Completions Industry Incident Review Panel #40 before handing over to Irlapati Zuka Row (GM Wells Operations, Shell QGC) for the Safety Moment 'Why Today Matters, Shell’s Shift in Focus', sharing Shell’s journey to integrate human performance principles into the way they work.

Lana returned to present an incident, ‘Emergency Response Preparedness – Responding to a Crisis’. Understandably, we focus on the Injured Person during and post-incident; however, the impact is also felt widely and long-term by friends, colleagues and first responders.  How we respond matters:

  • How we respond in the moment affects outcomes - “No number of drills could prepare me for realizing someone I knew personally was in that state, I froze, scared, numb and filled with confusion unable to support”
  • How we support each other after shapes recovery - The event had the most severe consequences, leaving a deep emotional imprint on all those involved.
  • How we lead through crisis defines our culture – Provision for psychological decompression or team-wide reflection is parmount.

Our Keynote ‘Don’t Wait for the Mayday!’ Christo Hudson (Founder, The Black Box Approach) followed.  He set the scene with a brief personal history, then shared his uncomplicated, brilliant and effective techniques for decelerating during a psychological crisis. Christo gave a masterclass in simple psychological decompression processes that can be implemented in any situation.

Following an afternoon tea break, Paul Whyte (Executive General Manager, HSEQ, NACAP), on behalf of our Health Working Group, presented ‘Assessing Psychosocial Hazards – A Case Study’, a look at how nacap is using Safer Together tools to develop their own policies and procedures.

  2. 5 Whys, and
  3. SMART Actions.
