In August, DrillSafe and Safer Together combined to deliver their 'Drill Safer Together' event in Brisbane, designed to share HSE best practices for the Australian onshore and offshore drilling and completion industry.
Chris Wilson (Chair, DrillSafe) opened the event with an acknowledgement of country and recognition of the growing collaboration between DrillSafe and Safer Together as we combined for our third event.
The Safety Moment was delivered by Kyle Koziol (Executive General Manager – Rig and Well Services, Ventia) with a salient reminder that too many of our teams continue to sustain hand injuries. Kyle reflected on our recent Hand and Finger Safety Forum and pointed delegates to the tools on Safer Together’s Hands and Finger Preservation Portal.
Daniel Dreier (Operations Manager, MPC Kinetic) followed with a very significant incident sharing of a recent potential fatality at site - a 4mm plug released under pressure striking a person in the head. The impact caused a fractured skull, internal bleeding and rendered the IP unconscious. The incident generated much discussion with the audience.
Functional Safety and the Human Machine Interface (HMI) was presented next, by Rob Egan (ARC) - sharing the theory and application of HMI through a series of engaging case studies.
Hazardous Materials Considerations for (early) Decommissioning Works, presented by Edward Rowley (Tetra Tech Coffey) - a fascinating insight into the occupational hygiene challenges of safely removing redundant infrastructure.
HSE Visual Analytics was presented by Matthew Spotkaeff (Drilling Domain Sales Lead, SLB), who gave us a glimpse into the "future is now" with some very innovative uses of AI technology to help improve behaviours around red zones at sites.
Natalie Martinovich (COO, Lifeline WA) delivered the well-received presentation on the Lifeline WA initiative, Resourceful Mind, an interactive and compelling insight into the peer-to-peer mental health support program designed by and for resources sector workers in partnership between Lifeline WA and the Chamber of Minerals and Energy WA.
Martin Flojgaard (Regional Director, IADC Australasia Chapter) followed with an update on all onshore and offshore drilling rigs in the region.
Carlos Montilla (Sales Director, ChampionX) closed off the session with thanks to all speakers, DrillSafe, Safer Together and the attendees. Carlos also informed members the next DCIIRP will be held in Toowoomba in November in partnership with the Qld. Process Safety Working Group.
We would like to thank our sponsors, ChampionX, Santos and Ventia for their generosity in support of this event.
