A vessel newly relocated to port had just been secured alongside and was being prepared for operational service.

As part of this process, a deck rating was positioning the shore gangway on the mezzanine deck.

After ascending from the main deck via the access ladder, the worker retrieved the gangway remote control from his pocket, and moved toward the open handrail area. While approaching the edge to operate the gangway, he tripped on exposed metal air lines, lost his footing, and fell approximately 2.9 meters onto the main deck—sustaining serious, life-altering injuries.

This incident prompted a nationwide review of vessel access arrangements and led to the development of a prototype mobile gangway.

The new design prioritises safety and is engineered for ease of use, road transportability, and adaptability. It features slew, luff, and telescopic functions to accommodate varying tidal conditions.
