Safety Culture Survey
An engagement tool to assess and measure safety culture maturity and identify key areas for focus and improvement.
Major SharingThe Safety Culture Survey is a workforce engagement tool to provide managers and supervisors with information about the overall safety attitude/feeling of a team, department, and organisation. It can also be used to provide real time feedback to work teams and obtain their insights and suggestions on how to improve safety.
It enables benchmarking of a company’s safety culture against industry peers. Through benchmarking it provides focus areas for managers and supervisors to target and improve on. It offers both a consistent assessment and comparison across the industry and industry sectors, and also specific insight at the company or work team level, aiding member companies and more broadly the industry, to identify improvement opportunities and develop targeted action plans.
Challenge
Leadership drives safety culture, which in turn drives safe behaviour. Many organisations in our Industry are utilising safety culture surveys to obtain views of their workforce and seek their ideas about safety. These tools are often too expensive for many smaller organisations to implement. Furthermore, they generally do not provide for real-time feedback – and are therefore not effective as a workforce engagement tool.
As organisations are using a range of different tools, the industry is unable to analyse the outputs of these surveys to determine a baseline measure of safety culture across the industry. Furthermore, individual companies are unable to benchmark their safety culture against industry peers.
Solution
Develop a cost effective safety culture survey can be used as a workforce engagement tool to:
- provide specific insights at work team level, and allow these insights to be rolled-up to a company level.
- enable benchmarking by providing consistent assessment and comparison across the industry and industry sectors (benchmarking).
- aid member companies and the industry more broadly to identify improvement opportunities and develop targeted action plans.
Result
The Working Group has developed a Safety Culture Survey as an engagement tool that is accessible to all of your workforce - even if they are spread far and wide - and a systematic, efficient way of obtaining their views and ideas about safety in your organisation.
The Safety Culture Survey is broadly based on safety leadership characteristics defined by the International Association of Oil and Gas Producers (IOGP) in IOGP Report 452, Shaping Safety Culture Through Safety Leadership.
