The Safer Together Rig Site Safety Working Group held its 18th Drilling and Completions Industry Incident Review Panel recently. The co-host and MC for the event was David Shakhovskoy, Senex Senior Drilling Engineer.
Easternwell, Schlumberger Land Rigs and Qteq all shared presentations highlighting personal impacts from incidents to more than 50 attendees. One of the presenters was joined on stage by the injured party who shared the impact his injury had on himself and his young family. Another presentation shed light on the emotional effects an injury can have, to the point of actually leaving the industry for a period of time.
This was followed by a panel discussion facilitated by Tom Pettitt of Safer Together. On the panel were: Ben Corbett – Origin, Ken White – Savanna and Brennan Reid – Senex. The panel shared their various experiences from their careers involving critical incidents. This was a powerful and deeply moving part of the event with panel members showing great strength to recount their stories to motivate us all to work tirelessly to prevent these types of events.
The Innovations segment of the event changed the energy and started with Blair Hart – Wild Desert and Ant MacKinnon – Arrow Energy, who gave us an update on the Assist & Assure Training Project which is targeting a launch in Q1 2020. They then facilitated an engaging and light-hearted Step 7 Conversation where delegates were asked to assess riding a Lime Scooter from the venue to the Botanic Gardens. This was a fun and accessible way to experience the programme, though some delegates thought the scooter option was too high risk and elected to walk or take an Uber.
This was followed by a fascinating way to view incident data severity by Kevin Geddert – Savanna. Kevin has developed a way of viewing incidents by combining injury severity and financial impact into the same data set. A couple of the key insights were that several first aid and non-work related events incurred significantly higher costs than several recordable injuries.

When closing the event co-host Trevor Vance said “Thanks to all those who presented today. I thought the quality and depth was exceptional. This event really drives home the reasons for keeping our people safe at work”.
